What is gout?

Added: 25 October 2026

Gout is arthritis caused by urate crystals triggering inflammation in a joint.

Symptoms, causes and assessment

Sudden severe pain, redness and swelling often affect the big toe, though other joints can be involved. Blood uric acid alone does not confirm the diagnosis. Joint infection can look similar, especially in a first or unusual episode.

Care and when to seek help

Treating an attack and preventing recurrence are different plans; kidney function and medicines affect choices. A hot swollen joint with fever needs urgent attention; diet changes alone may not suffice.
