What is sepsis?

Added: 25 October 2026

Sepsis is a life-threatening response to infection that can damage organs.

Symptoms, causes and assessment

Fever or unusually low temperature, fast breathing, racing pulse, severe weakness, confusion or clammy skin can occur. Not everyone has every sign; older or immunocompromised people may present differently. The source of infection is not always obvious.

Care and when to seek help

Suspected sepsis needs emergency care; seeking antibiotics at home or waiting can be dangerous. Hospital assessment, infection treatment and organ support may be required.
