What is cervical cancer screening?

Added: 25 October 2026

Cervical cancer screening looks for HPV infection or cell changes before symptoms appear.

Symptoms, causes and assessment

HPV tests and, in some programs, Pap tests are used. Starting age and interval vary by country, age and prior results; a normal result does not mean zero risk. HPV vaccination helps prevention but does not always replace screening.

Care and when to seek help

An abnormal result is not itself a cancer diagnosis and may call for follow-up. If unusual bleeding occurs, consult a clinician rather than waiting for routine screening.
