What is Parkinson disease?

Added: 25 October 2026

Parkinson disease is a progressive condition affecting the nervous system’s control of movement.

Symptoms, causes and assessment

Slowness, resting tremor, stiffness or balance problems may appear, though not all occur in everyone. Smell, bowel and sleep changes are possible nonmovement symptoms. Diagnosis is largely clinical.

Care and when to seek help

Medicines and rehabilitation can support function; dosing and timing are individualized. Discuss falls, swallowing trouble or marked mental changes promptly. Not every tremor is Parkinson disease.
