What is inflammatory bowel disease?
Inflammatory bowel disease includes chronic intestinal inflammation such as Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis.
Symptoms, causes and assessment
Prolonged diarrhea, pain, blood in stool, weight loss or fatigue may occur. Diagnosis uses blood and stool tests, endoscopy and sometimes imaging. It is different from irritable bowel syndrome despite similar names.
Care and when to seek help
Treatment aims to control inflammation according to location and severity, with follow-up and nutrition support as needed. Heavy bleeding, dehydration or high fever requires urgent assessment.
