What are the signs of pregnancy?

Added: 22 October 2026

Early pregnancy signs vary from person to person. Some people experience several symptoms, while others notice no changes during the first weeks. A missed period, breast tenderness, nausea and fatigue are common, but symptoms alone cannot confirm pregnancy.

Possible signs in early pregnancy

For people with regular menstrual cycles, not having an expected period is one of the earliest and more reliable signs. Breast fullness or tenderness, unusual fatigue, nausea or vomiting at any time of day, more frequent urination, changes in smell and taste, food aversions or cravings may occur. Bloating, constipation, mood changes, mild pelvic cramps, milky white vaginal discharge and light spotting around the expected period are also possible. None of these signs occurs in everyone. Premenstrual changes, stress, infections, hormonal changes and some medicines can cause similar symptoms.

When should you test, and when should you seek help?

Pregnancy is confirmed by a test taken at the appropriate time and, when needed, a clinical assessment—not by symptoms alone. A home urine test is generally more reliable from the first day of a missed period; follow the package instructions. If the result is negative but the period still does not begin, repeat the test after a few days or contact a healthcare service. After a positive result, contact a family doctor, obstetrician-gynaecologist or appropriate healthcare service to plan prenatal care. Severe or one-sided abdominal or pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, pain at the tip of the shoulder, marked dizziness or fainting can be associated with emergencies such as ectopic pregnancy and require immediate medical help. This information is not a diagnosis.
