What helps with back pain?
Back pain is common and often improves within weeks, but pain intensity alone does not reveal its cause. Movement and warning signs matter.
Causes, symptoms and diagnosis
1. Definition and causes Muscle and joint causes are common; nerve problems, fracture or infection are less common. History, injury and examination guide the assessment. 2. Symptoms and assessment Pain may spread down a leg or limit movement. Strength and sensation are assessed when needed; routine imaging is not useful for every episode. 3. Care and treatment Staying active as tolerated is usually better than prolonged bed rest. Pain relief or physiotherapy is tailored to risks; medicines are not safe for everyone.
Warning signs and prevention
4. When to seek help New bladder or bowel problems, numbness around the groin or progressive leg weakness require urgent care. Fever, major injury or unexplained weight loss also need review. 5. Prevention and daily life Gradual activity, safe lifting and guided exercise can help. Persistent or recurrent pain warrants individualized assessment.
