What is sinusitis?
Sinusitis is inflammation of the air-filled spaces around the nose. It often follows a cold; duration and severity guide assessment.
Causes, symptoms and diagnosis
1. Definition and causes Inflammation can block sinus drainage. Allergy or nasal structure may contribute; facial pain alone does not establish sinusitis. 2. Symptoms and assessment Blocked nose, discharge, facial pressure and reduced smell can occur. Course and examination guide diagnosis; recurrent or prolonged symptoms may need further work-up. 3. Care and treatment Many acute cases resolve over time. Appropriate pain relief and nasal care may help; antibiotics are not needed for everyone.
Warning signs and prevention
4. When to seek help Swelling near the eye, visual change, severe headache, confusion or serious fever need urgent assessment. Persistent one-sided symptoms also merit review. 5. Prevention and daily life Avoiding smoke, managing allergy and hand hygiene may help. Recurrent symptoms call for an underlying-cause assessment.
