What is tetanus?
Tetanus is a serious illness in which a toxin made by environmental bacteria affects the nervous system.
Symptoms, causes and assessment
Jaw stiffness, muscle rigidity and painful spasms may occur. Bacteria can enter wounds; risk is not limited to rusty metal and includes contaminated or deep injuries. Tetanus does not spread from person to person.
Care and when to seek help
Vaccination and wound care are important. Seek medical advice for a contaminated or deep wound if vaccine history is uncertain; spasms or trouble swallowing requires emergency help.
