What is acute kidney injury?

Added: 25 October 2026

Acute kidney injury is a sudden decline in kidney function over hours or days.

Symptoms, causes and assessment

Dehydration, severe infection, circulation problems, obstruction or medicines may cause it. Urine output may drop, but not always. Compare blood tests with previous values and investigate the cause.

Care and when to seek help

Early care and addressing the cause may prevent complications. Drinking excessive fluid on one’s own can be harmful with some heart or kidney conditions. Seek prompt assessment for suddenly low urine output, confusion or severe weakness.
