What is tuberculosis?

Added: 25 October 2026

Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that most often affects the lungs.

Symptoms, causes and assessment

Prolonged cough, fever, night sweats and weight loss may occur; latent infection may cause no illness. Transmission is associated with active lung or throat disease through the air. Assessment may use symptoms, exposure, tests and imaging.

Care and when to seek help

Treatment uses a planned combination of medicines; stopping early can increase resistance and transmission. Seek care for exposure or persistent cough; coughing blood or breathing difficulty needs urgent assessment.
