What is bipolar disorder?

Added: 25 October 2026

Bipolar disorder is a mood condition that can include depressive episodes and episodes of mania or hypomania.

Symptoms, causes and assessment

Mania can involve unusually elevated or irritable mood, reduced need for sleep, rapid speech and risky behavior. This differs from ordinary mood shifts. Diagnosis considers duration, severity and impact on functioning.

Care and when to seek help

Ongoing follow-up, education and appropriate medication matter; do not stop treatment abruptly. Severe mania, loss of contact with reality or thoughts of self-harm need urgent assessment.
