What are kidney function tests?

Added: 25 October 2026

Kidney function tests are blood and urine measures that help assess filtration and other kidney functions.

Symptoms, causes and assessment

Creatinine and estimated filtration rate, urine albumin and sometimes electrolytes are assessed. Age, muscle mass, medicines and prior results influence interpretation. Trends and context matter more than one isolated number.

Care and when to seek help

Do not change treatment based solely on a home or laboratory result. If you have diabetes, hypertension or kidney risks, plan suitable tests and frequency with a clinician.
