Osteoarthritis is a common joint condition involving changes in cartilage and surrounding tissues.
Symptoms, causes and assessment
Pain and stiffness may affect knees, hips, hands or spine. Age, past injury and loading play roles; X-ray changes and pain do not always match. Other inflammatory joint conditions may need to be ruled out.
Care and when to seek help
Adapted activity, strengthening, weight management and pain control are individualized; procedures may sometimes be needed. A suddenly hot, swollen joint with fever requires urgent assessment for infection.
