What is a cataract?

Added: 25 October 2026

A cataract is clouding of the eye’s lens that can affect vision.

Symptoms, causes and assessment

Blurred sight, glare, trouble seeing at night or faded colors may develop. It often progresses slowly; other eye conditions can cause similar symptoms. An examination identifies the cause of visual change.

Care and when to seek help

Glasses or improved lighting may help early on; surgery may be considered when daily life is affected. Sudden vision loss or a painful red eye is not typical slow cataract and needs urgent examination.
