What is hepatitis B?
Hepatitis B is an infection of the liver caused by the hepatitis B virus.
Symptoms, causes and assessment
It can spread through blood and certain body fluids, not casual social contact. Acute infection may have no symptoms or cause jaundice, nausea and fatigue. The chance of chronic infection varies with age and immunity; blood tests clarify status.
Care and when to seek help
Vaccination is important; evaluation after exposure can be time-sensitive. Chronic infection needs liver follow-up and sometimes treatment. Interpretation depends on which markers were tested.
