What is dementia?

Added: 25 October 2026

Dementia is an umbrella term for decline in memory or other thinking abilities that affects daily life.

Symptoms, causes and assessment

Alzheimer disease is only one possible cause. Language, navigation, judgment or behavior may change. Dementia is not normal aging; medicines, vitamin issues or other illness can mimic it, so assessment matters.

Care and when to seek help

Care planning includes safety, daily function and caregiver support. Sudden confusion over hours may be an urgent condition rather than dementia and requires prompt assessment.
