What is Eggplant?

Added: 25 October 2026

Eggplant is a warm-season nightshade producing fleshy fruit in many shapes and colors.

Structure and life cycle

Form and fruit: Flowers often have purple tones and develop into berries in the botanical sense. Purple skin is common, but white and green varieties exist, so dark color is not the sole maturity sign. Seeds lie within the flesh. Eggplant is related to tomato and potato but is a distinct species.

Growth, uses and cautions

Growing and cooking: It favors warm soil, sunlight and steady water; cold slows growth. Fruit is usually harvested young, before seeds harden. Eggplant is commonly cooked, and resemblance to wild nightshades should not be used to identify edible plants.
