What is Turmeric plant?
Turmeric is a tropical ginger-family plant whose yellow-orange rhizome is used as a spice.
Structure and life cycle
Form and propagation: Large leaves rise above ground while storage rhizomes grow below. Cultivation commonly uses rhizome pieces. Curcumin is one contributor to the pigment profile, not the sole substance in the spice. Turmeric and ginger are related but distinct species.
Growth, uses and cautions
Growing and caution: Warmth, moisture and drainage matter, and rhizomes undergo cleaning and processing after harvest. Culinary spice and concentrated supplements differ. Supplement effects, safety and interactions require medical assessment; the plant’s use does not prove it treats disease.
