What is Spearmint?

Added: 24 October 2026

Mint names many species and hybrids. Spearmint, Mentha spicata, is an aromatic perennial with toothed leaves and vigorous spreading stems.

Botany and life cycle

1. Identity and native range Mentha spicata belongs to Lamiaceae. Cultivation and hybridization complicate accounts of its original range; a generic mint label need not identify it. 2. How to recognize it Square stems, opposite toothed leaves and dense terminal flower clusters are characteristic. Related mints vary in scent and chemistry. 3. Flowering and reproduction Insects visit flowers. Underground runners spread vigorously, while seeds can also form. Root fragments can establish unwanted patches.

Ecology, cultivation and uses

4. Habitat and ecology It grows well in moist light conditions and tolerates partial shade. Flowers can feed insects, but unchecked growth can crowd neighbors. 5. Cultivation and care Use moist but aerated soil. Containers or root barriers help limit spread. Harvest regularly and inspect escaping runners. 6. Uses and cautions Leaves flavor food, drinks and tea. Concentrated oils and high medicinal doses require different safety considerations than culinary use.
