What is German chamomile?

Added: 24 October 2026

“Chamomile” refers to several plants. German chamomile, Matricaria chamomilla, is an annual with white ray florets around a yellow center.

Botany and life cycle

1. Identity and native range Matricaria chamomilla is an Asteraceae species associated with Europe and western Asia. Roman chamomile is a different plant. 2. How to recognize it Finely divided leaves, branching stems and composite heads help identify it. Yellow centers become raised and white rays can bend backward; resemblance alone is insufficient. 3. Flowering and reproduction Each head contains many small flowers. Insects can aid pollination and seeds make the next generation. It is annual.

Ecology, cultivation and uses

4. Habitat and ecology Sunny open and disturbed ground can suit it. Flowers feed some insects. Harvesting unidentified wild daisies creates risks. 5. Cultivation and care Sow on a light well-drained surface and keep seedlings moist without waterlogging. Dry harvested heads carefully to prevent mold. 6. Uses and cautions Dried heads are used in drinks. People allergic to Asteraceae may react; herbal tea is not a substitute for medical care.
