What is Rice?
Rice is the processed grain of Oryza sativa. Paddy can refer to the husked grain or growing crop; rice cultivation is more varied than flooded fields alone.
Botany and life cycle
1. Identity and native range Oryza sativa is an Asian Poaceae crop. Varieties differ in grain type, growth duration and climatic adaptation. 2. How to recognize it Narrow leaves and jointed hollow stems bear branched flower clusters. Grains form within husks; milling changes their composition. 3. Flowering and reproduction Flowers mostly self-pollinate. Heat and water stress near flowering can reduce grain set; suitable grain can be saved as seed.
Ecology, cultivation and uses
4. Habitat and ecology Flooding supports some cultivation practices, while other systems use less water. Water demand, methane and wetland impacts vary by method. 5. Cultivation and care Choose a local cultivar and calendar, manage water and nutrients, and monitor pests. Continuous flooding is not universally required. 6. Uses and cautions Rice is a staple food. Removing bran and germ changes nutrition. Paddy and polished rice are different processing stages; dry safe storage matters.
