What is Apple tree?

Added: 24 October 2026

The apple tree has many cultivars producing fruit with varied color and flavor. Cultivated apple is known as Malus domestica.

Botany and life cycle

1. Identity and native range Malus domestica belongs to Rosaceae. Cultivated apples have Central Asian ancestry and a long history of selection and hybridization. 2. How to recognize it The deciduous tree bears pink-white flowers. Several floral tissues contribute to the fleshy apple; size and form depend on cultivar and rootstock. 3. Flowering and reproduction Insects pollinate flowers. Many cultivars need compatible pollen from another cultivar. Seeds do not breed true to a named apple variety.

Ecology, cultivation and uses

4. Habitat and ecology Temperate climates and winter dormancy suit apples, with cultivar-specific needs. Orchard blossoms feed pollinators, but habitat and pesticide choices matter. 5. Cultivation and care Choose a suitable rootstock, sunny site and compatible flowering partners. Manage pruning, water and disease; late frost can damage flowers. 6. Uses and cautions Fruit is eaten fresh or processed. Large quantities of chewed seeds are inappropriate. Do not attribute unproven medical benefits to apple products.
