What is Banana plant?
Banana is a large herb whose pseudostem is formed by tightly wrapped leaf sheaths rather than wood.
Structure and life cycle
Life cycle: Shoots emerge from an underground stem; a pseudostem fruits once and dies while new shoots grow. Clusters develop from many flowers. Many edible cultivars are seedless and propagated vegetatively, making plants of the same cultivar genetically similar.
Growth, uses and cautions
Growing and limits: Warm frost-free conditions, water and nutrients favor growth, while strong winds shred broad leaves. Disease management matters in commercial production. Musa includes many species and hybrids; bananas differ in cultivar, color and culinary use.
