What is Potato plant?
Potato is a nightshade grown for its underground starch-storing tubers.
Structure and life cycle
How tubers form: The ends of underground stems swell into tubers; a potato is a modified stem, not a root. Its eyes are buds that can sprout. The plant may produce flowers and true seeds, but cultivation commonly uses healthy seed tubers.
Growth, uses and cautions
Growth and safety: Loose soil, balanced water and disease-free planting material matter. Light-exposed green tubers may accumulate glycoalkaloids; strongly green, bitter or damaged potatoes should not be eaten. Leaves and green berries are not food.
