What is Walnut tree?

Added: 25 October 2026

The walnut is a large deciduous tree grown for its oil-rich seeds inside hard shells.

Structure and life cycle

Form and reproduction: It has compound leaves and wind-borne pollen. Male flowers appear in hanging catkins; female flowers develop into fruit with a green outer husk. Beneath it lie a hard shell and edible seed. Timing of male and female flowering may differ among cultivars.

Growth, uses and cautions

Cultivation and value: Deep soil and room to grow are useful, while late spring frost may damage new shoots. Cultivar choice, pollination and climate affect production. Walnuts provide food and timber; shade, competition for water and compounds produced by some walnut species influence plants beneath them.
