What is Garden pea?
The garden pea is a legume grown for fresh or dried seeds and may climb using tendrils.
Structure and life cycle
Life cycle: Tendrils of climbing varieties grip supports, and flowers produce seed-bearing pods. Some varieties are grown for edible young pods. Flower traits made peas an important model in inheritance experiments. Root-nodule bacteria may support nitrogen fixation.
Growth, uses and cautions
Growing and use: Peas prefer cool seasons; excessive heat can reduce flowers and pods. Fresh peas may lose quality quickly after harvest, so freezing is common. The name covers different harvested stages: tender pods, fresh seeds and dried seeds have different uses.
