What is Sweet orange tree?
Sweet orange is an evergreen citrus tree grown for its juicy segmented fruit.
Structure and life cycle
Flowers and fruit: Fragrant white flowers develop into thick-skinned, many-segmented fruit. Cultivars differ in flavor, rind thickness, seed content and harvest season. Oil glands occur in the outer peel, while white pith and membranes surround the segments.
Growth, uses and cautions
Growth and use: It favors warm sunny conditions and is sensitive to frost. Good drainage and regular irrigation support roots and yield. Fruit is eaten fresh or juiced; juice does not supply the same fiber as whole fruit. Sweet orange, mandarin and bitter orange are related but distinct.
