Is parsley a biennial plant?

Added: 27 October 2026

Parsley is a biennial culinary herb that tends to produce leaves and roots in its first year, then flowers and seed in its second.

Structure, development and life cycle

A leaf rosette develops first and energy accumulates in the storage root. After a cold period the stem elongates, umbels of small yellowish flowers appear and leaf quality changes. Curly and flat-leaf cultivars are selected forms within the same species. Root parsley is bred for a larger storage root.

Growing, uses and cautions

Seeds may germinate slowly and unevenly, requiring moisture and patience. It grows from sun to light shade in organic, draining soil. Harvesting outer leaves preserves new central growth. Because it can resemble poisonous parsley relatives such as hemlock, wild gathering should never rely on appearance alone.
