How are zonal pelargoniums grown on balconies?
Zonal pelargoniums, associated with Pelargonium zonale and related hybrids, are familiar balcony plants. They differ from hardy plants in the genus Geranium. A darker leaf zone is often visible but varies among cultivars.
Containers, light, and water
Use drainage holes and an aerated medium. Adequate sun supports flowering, while extreme afternoon heat may need management. Allow some surface drying without prolonged drought. Watering depends on container size, temperature, and root growth rather than a fixed daily amount. Persistent wetness increases stem and root problems.
Deadheading and overwintering
Remove spent flowers and damaged leaves for appearance and hygiene. Excess nitrogen may favor leaves over flowers. Frost-sensitive plants may need bright protected overwintering rather than a warm dark room. Propagate from healthy cuttings with clean tools. Culinary uses of selected scented pelargoniums must not be generalized to every part of ornamental zonal plants.
