How does a spider plant produce plantlets?

Added: 27 October 2026

Spider plant is a perennial known for long strap-like leaves and plantlets borne on arching stems.

Structure, development and life cycle

Mature rosettes send out long flowering stems, and plantlets with leaves and root initials form near small white flowers. They can root while attached if placed on soil or be separated into a new pot. Fleshy storage roots provide some drought tolerance. Green-and-white striping depends on cultivar.

Growing, uses and cautions

Bright indirect light preserves variegation, while harsh midday sun may scorch tips. Water as the top dries and divide crowded roots when needed. Brown tips do not prove drought alone; salt buildup, low humidity or uneven watering can contribute. Although generally considered low-risk for pets, chewing should still be discouraged.
