How does a pistachio tree bear nuts?

Added: 27 October 2026

Pistachio is a deciduous tree adapted to dry summers and cultivated for edible seeds.

Structure, development and life cycle

Male and female flowers occur on separate trees, and wind carries pollen to female flowers. Clusters form fruits with an edible seed inside a hull and hard shell. The shell of many cultivars splits naturally at maturity. Trees may alternate high and low crops between years, a tendency called alternate bearing.

Growing, uses and cautions

Long hot summers, adequate winter chilling and drained soil are needed, while late frost can damage flowers. Orchards require correctly placed male pollinizers. Relative salt tolerance does not mean unlimited salt or drought tolerance. Rapid hulling and drying after harvest reduce staining and mold risk.
