Why does a plane tree shed bark?

Added: 27 October 2026

Oriental plane is a long-lived tree known for broad leaves, a massive trunk and mottled bark that flakes away in patches.

Structure, development and life cycle

As the trunk expands, rigid outer bark cannot stretch at the same rate and separates in irregular plates, revealing pale younger bark. This natural process alone is not disease. Spherical fruit heads carry many small hairy seeds. In native habitats the tree develops deep roots along streams and rivers.

Growing, uses and cautions

Its large crown, strong roots and longevity require distance from buildings, pavement and utilities. Regular water supports young growth, while established trees better tolerate seasonal drought. Structural pruning is planned early to avoid large wounds. Leaf and fruit hairs can mechanically irritate sensitive people.
