Why does the Christmas cactus bloom in winter?
Christmas cactus is a Brazilian forest cactus that forms buds in response to shorter days and cooler nights.
Structure, development and life cycle
Flat green sections are photosynthetic stem segments rather than leaves. Long uninterrupted autumn nights and moderately cool conditions promote flowering signals. Abrupt changes in heat, light or moisture after buds form can cause drop. Unlike desert cacti, its habitat is humid forest branches and pockets of organic debris.
Growing, uses and cautions
Bright indirect light, an airy organic mix and watering after slight surface drying are suitable. It needs steady moisture in summer growth without waterlogging. Avoid frequent relocation during budding. Related Thanksgiving and Easter cacti differ in segment edges and flowering time.
