How does an African violet bloom?

Added: 27 October 2026

African violet is an East African plant grown for fuzzy leaf rosettes and flowers that can recur through the year.

Structure, development and life cycle

Adequate light, maturity and balanced nutrition support flower-bud formation. Leaves form a rosette around a short stem, and leaf-petiole cuttings may produce new rosettes at the base. Day length and temperature influence flowering rhythm. It is unrelated to true violets in the genus Viola; the name comes from flower resemblance.

Growing, uses and cautions

Bright filtered light, a small draining pot and warm conditions are suitable. Water with room-temperature water after slight drying and do not leave the crown wet for long. An oversized pot can keep roots wet too long. When leaf spots appear, assess cold water, direct sun, pests and disease separately.
