How does a rubber plant branch?
The rubber plant is a tropical Ficus with large glossy leaves that can become a substantial tree in nature.
Structure, development and life cycle
A young stem often grows on one axis because the terminal bud produces growth-regulating hormones. Removing the tip may activate side buds and produce one or several branches, depending on light, health and season. New leaves unfurl from a colored sheath. White latex from cuts is a defensive sap that may irritate skin.
Growing, uses and cautions
Bright indirect light, warmth and partial drying between waterings support balanced growth. Sudden exposure to much stronger sun may scorch leaves, while repeated relocation can trigger leaf drop. Prune with clean tools and gloves. Its common name does not mean household latex extraction is safe or practical.
