Do cilantro leaves and coriander seeds come from the same plant?

Added: 26 October 2026

Coriander, Coriandrum sativum, is an annual herb. Fresh leaves and dried fruits have different aromas. In English, cilantro commonly means the leaves, while coriander can mean the fruits or the whole plant depending on context.

Cool conditions for leaf production

Use draining soil with sun or suitable light shade in hot climates. Heat and long days promote flowering. Successive small sowings can maintain leaf supply better than expecting one plant to crop all season. Direct sowing avoids root disturbance; transplant young plants carefully if needed. Crowding restricts airflow and leaf development.

Fruit harvest and identification

Leave some plants to flower for fruit production. Cut ripening umbels before excessive shattering and dry appropriately; damp sealed storage encourages mold. Upper leaves become more finely divided than basal leaves without indicating a different species. Wild carrot-family plants should not be judged edible by smell alone. Flavor differences reflect tissue and chemistry rather than different plant origins.
