How does black mulberry grow?
Black mulberry, Morus nigra, is a long-lived deciduous tree. Its ripe fruit combines numerous small fruitlets. Dark fruit alone does not identify the species, since some white mulberry cultivars also produce dark-colored fruit.
Growth and garden placement
Plant in sun with adequate rooting space and drainage. Established trees tolerate some drought, but young trees and cropping plants still need monitoring for water stress. Allow room for a spreading canopy. Fallen fruit can stain paving, making placement above seating or walkways inconvenient. Reliable nursery identification is more useful than fruit color alone.
Harvest and propagation
Soft ripe fruit needs gentle picking and prompt use. Seedlings may not reproduce parental traits, so suitable grafting or cutting techniques preserve cultivars. Establishing structure while young is preferable to indiscriminate large-branch removal later. The fruit's use as food does not establish that leaves or extracts are effective and safe disease treatments; cultivation information should remain distinct from therapeutic claims.
