How should a peach tree be cared for?
Peach is a deciduous fruit tree, Prunus persica, with conspicuous pink flowers. Nectarines are smooth-skinned forms of the same species, rather than a separate species created by combining peach with another fruit.
Cultivar, site, and crop load
Peaches prefer sun and well-drained soil. Cultivars differ in chilling requirement, ripening time, and disease susceptibility. Fruit is borne mainly on shoots produced the previous year, so pruning should renew productive wood. Excessive fruit set can strain branches and reduce fruit size. Thinning helps balance crop load with tree vigor and cultivar characteristics.
Watering, sanitation, and harvest
Irregular watering and excessive fertilization can disrupt balanced growth; soil and leaf assessments guide feeding. Removing diseased fallen fruit and maintaining airflow help disease management. Red skin alone does not establish ripeness; background color and firmness also matter. Stones and wilted leaves differ from edible flesh and can contain toxic compounds, so they should not be used as food.
