How should hyacinths be cared for?
Hyacinth, Hyacinthus orientalis, is a bulbous plant producing fragrant flower clusters in several colors. Ready-flowering indoor pots often result from carefully timed commercial production.
Light, cool conditions, and watering
Bright, moderately cool conditions can prolong a flowering pot's display. Avoid standing water and repeatedly filling the bulb crown. Garden plants need a suitable cool seasonal period. Heavy flower clusters may require support. In water-growing displays, submerging the entire bulb increases rot risk; roots and the bulb body need different treatment.
After flowering and handling
Remove spent clusters while retaining green leaves to restore reserves. A forced bulb may not flower equally strongly the following year and needs recovery time. Bulbs are inedible and can irritate skin. Choose firm mold-free stock. Other bulbous genera sharing similar common names should not automatically receive identical care.
