How does the coconut palm disperse?
Coconut palm is a tropical palm whose large fibrous water-resistant fruits can disperse along coasts.
Structure, development and life cycle
A fibrous outer layer cushions the fruit and aids flotation, while the seed's solid food tissue and liquid endosperm support the embryo. Under suitable conditions the shoot and roots emerge through the whole fruit. If the single crown growing point is destroyed, the palm cannot replace it with side branches as many trees do.
Growing, uses and cautions
High heat, strong light, moisture and a frost-free climate are needed; young plants may be less tolerant of salt wind than adults. The root system is broad but mostly shallow. Flesh, water, oil and fiber become different products. Opened or spoiled coconut water may pose microbial risk, and freshness is not judged by appearance alone.
