How is lemongrass grown?

Added: 27 October 2026

Lemongrass is a tropical grass with a citrus-like aroma in its leaves and stem bases.

Structure, development and life cycle

Dense leaf clumps arise from short rhizomes and grow rapidly in warm weather. The lemon scent comes from volatile compounds including citral; the plant is not related to citrus. Cooking mainly uses the swollen lower stems and younger leaf portions. Sharp leaf edges can scratch skin during harvest.

Growing, uses and cautions

Full sun, warmth, ample water and fertile draining soil support strong growth. In frosty climates it can be container-grown and protected in winter, when low light slows growth. Clumps propagate by division. Culinary use differs from applying concentrated essential oil, which may irritate skin.
