How is clove spice formed?

Added: 27 October 2026

Clove spice consists of unopened flower buds harvested and dried from a tropical evergreen tree.

Structure, development and life cycle

The bud stalk and crown dry into the familiar dark nail-like form. Harvesting too early or late affects aroma and appearance. Eugenol is an important contributor to clove oil's scent but does not represent its entire chemistry. It is not botanically related to Dianthus garden carnations.

Growing, uses and cautions

Warm humid frost-free climates, deep draining soil and regular water while young are required. Trees may need several years to reach bearing maturity. Hygienic drying and airflow reduce mold risk. Essential oil is highly concentrated and should not be assumed to have the same safety profile as culinary buds.
