How does autumn color form in Oriental beech?
Oriental beech is a deciduous tree capable of forming large shaded canopies in humid Black Sea-region forests.
Structure, development and life cycle
As days shorten and temperatures fall, the tree dismantles chlorophyll and retrieves nutrients, revealing yellow and brown pigments. An abscission layer forms at the petiole base and the leaf falls. Beechnuts are triangular seeds developing within a bristly cupule. Shade-tolerant seedlings may grow slowly beneath forest cover for years.
Growing, uses and cautions
Deep moist but aerated soil and a cool humid climate favor beech. Long summer drought, compaction and changes around roots stress mature trees. Seed crops vary strongly between years, and mast years support wildlife. Retaining deadwood, multiple ages and natural regeneration supports forest biodiversity.
