Why does a peace lily droop?

Added: 27 October 2026

Peace lily is a tropical forest-floor plant cultivated for dark green leaves and white bracts.

Structure, development and life cycle

The white part is not a single flower but a modified leaf called a spathe surrounding a spike of tiny flowers. Sudden drooping often reflects reduced water pressure in cells, yet root rot in constantly wet soil can look similar. Check soil moisture rather than watering automatically from appearance alone. Aging spathes may gradually turn green.

Growing, uses and cautions

Bright indirect light, even but not excessive moisture and moderately high humidity are suitable. Pots without drainage, cold drafts and direct sun can worsen leaf problems. A crowded clump can be divided or moved one pot size up. Plant tissues contain oxalates and should not be eaten by people or pets.
