How does grapefruit develop?
Grapefruit is a cultivated citrus hybrid grown for large segmented fruits.
Structure, development and life cycle
The flower ovary develops into a many-chambered fruit, with juice vesicles filling each segment. White, pink and red cultivars differ in pigment and flavor. Fruit clusters resembling grape bunches helped inspire the English name. Seed number and bitterness vary with cultivar, pollination and maturity.
Growing, uses and cautions
Warm sunny low-frost conditions, drainage and regular water are needed. Peel color and sweetness do not always develop at the same rate on the tree. Grapefruit can alter how some medicines are processed by intestinal and liver enzymes. People taking regular medication should seek professional advice; not every citrus has the same interaction.
