How do Aloe vera leaves hold water?

Added: 27 October 2026

Aloe vera is a dry-region succulent that stores water in thick leaves arranged in a rosette.

Structure, development and life cycle

A waxy outer layer limits water loss, while inner tissues store water in a gel-like form. CAM photosynthesis shifts much gas exchange to cooler nighttime hours and reduces water use. Offsets may form around the main rosette. Small teeth along leaf edges are protective and do not make the plant a cactus.

Growing, uses and cautions

Very bright light, a fast-draining mix and deep watering only after full drying are suitable. Water left in the rosette or saucer encourages rot. A plant not acclimated to sun may burn if moved outdoors suddenly. Do not assume home-grown leaf gel is edible or medicinal; the yellow latex layer can irritate and cause digestive problems.
