Which conditions suit tarragon?

Added: 27 October 2026

Tarragon is a perennial daisy-family herb whose slender aromatic leaves are used in cooking.

Structure, development and life cycle

Sterile French tarragon is known for strong flavor and is usually propagated by division or cuttings. Seed-grown Russian tarragon may be larger and milder. A rhizomatous root system expands the clump. Small flowers may appear, but not every cultivated form produces viable seed.

Growing, uses and cautions

Sunny, airy conditions and soil that does not remain wet in winter are suitable. Heavy wet winter soil can cause root loss. Regular light harvest encourages young shoots, while very late heavy pruning is avoided. A seed packet should not be assumed to be French tarragon without correct identification.
