How does web caching work?

Added: 24 October 2026

Web caching reuses a previous HTTP response when its rules allow it.

Freshness and validation

Cache-Control defines storage and freshness. After expiry, a conditional request with an ETag may return 304 if unchanged, avoiding a new body transfer.

Uses and limitations

It speeds page loads and saves bandwidth. Caching personalized responses in a shared cache can leak data; private and no-store directives must be chosen correctly.
