What are USB and USB-C?

Added: 21 October 2026

USB is a family of standards for connections, data transfer and power delivery between computers and peripherals. USB-C describes the physical connector shape. Its presence alone does not determine transfer speed, charging power or video output.

Connector shape versus capability

A USB-C plug is designed to work in either orientation. However, two similar-looking cables can differ internally and support different features. Speed depends on both connected devices, the cable and the protocol in use. Power delivery likewise depends on the conditions jointly supported by the charger, cable and receiving device. Mechanisms such as USB Power Delivery can negotiate power between compatible devices. Not every USB-C connection carries video; video output and other alternate functions require compatible hardware. The connector alone therefore does not prove that a laptop can charge or connect to a monitor through one cable.

Choosing cables and accessories

If file transfers are slower than expected, the cable and port should be checked alongside the storage device. Hubs and docking stations may share bandwidth across several peripherals. Product documentation should be examined separately for speed, power and video support. Cables with unsuitable power ratings, damage or uncertain reliability should be avoided. A cable that charges a device does not necessarily transfer data or support every speed. Start by identifying the need: phone charging, external storage, high-resolution displays and multiple peripherals can have different requirements. Labels and technical documentation explain more than connector shape alone.
